Premier Wen Jiabao met with International Members of CCICED 2007 AGM in Ziguangge of Zhongnanhai on November 29.

Premier Wen Jiabao said, the theme of “Innovation for an Environmentally-Friendly Society” of this AGM is very good, just reflecting two key issues for the development strategy of China. The Chinese Government places the development of an innovation country and resource conservation & environmentally-friendly society at an important position in the industrialization and modernization strategy and takes environmental protection and resource saving as important tasks for economic and social development. To finish this hard task, we have identified binding targets for energy saving and emission reduction and made a great deal of efforts with primary achievements. Energy consumption per unit GDP dropped 2.78% in the first 6 months of 2007. The emission of major pollutants stopped the continuous rising trend of the past years with downturn of both SO2 and COD emissions. We will take more stringent environmental protection measures, vigorously raise energy efficiency, develop renewable energy sources and reduce the emission of greenhouse gas. China is willing to enhance cooperation with other countries in the world and jointly address global environmental problems. As a dialogue platform between China and international communities in the field of environment and development, CCICED should make full use of its advantages and put forward recommendations to sustainable development of China.

Mr. Töpfer and Mr. Brende, International Vice Chairs of CCICED as well as other International Members introduced to Premier Wen major policy recommendations of CCICED 2007 AGM to the Chinese Government. Minister Zhou Shengxian of SEPA and other officials were at the meeting.
