SPEECH AT THE MEETING

Mr. chairman,

I am privileged to be invited to the meeting of the china council. I am very pleased to get to know so many experts who are both knowledgeable and enthusiastic toward environmental protection. And I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the council and its working Groups for their remarkable achievements in the past few years.

This meeting has had very good discussions on many issues, such as sustainable agriculture, cleaner production and cleaner energy just to name a few, My province, which is the issue of cleaner energy, and have learned a lot in that respect from experts around the table during the past few days.

During the discussions, many Council Members put forward the suggestion of setting up demonstration areas. Considering that Jilin is rich in ecological diversity, ranging from mountainous areas, forest areas, plains to grasslands, we are willing to explore the possibility with the Council and its Working Groups of setting up demonstration areas in our province. The Provincial Government of Jilin will offer full support to the Council.

As a scientific worker from a less developed province, I feel that we have a lot to do in the future. The strategy of sustainable development must be adhered to. In formulation our development plans, environment should be taken into serious account. And we need to make further efforts to raise public awareness, strength en legislation, and promote investment.

And lastly, may I once again invite you to Jilin Province. We welcome opportunities of cooperation in the field of environmental protection. And we welcome the Council and its Working Groups to have meetings in Jilin.
