Mr. Niu was the Team Leader and chief scientist of the Team of Sustainable Development Strategy Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, fellow of the Academy of Science for the Developing World, member of the Expert Committee for the National 11th “Five-Year” Plan, guest professor of the SDLP of Yale University and Fulblight Virginia University. He is also the Chinese Chair of Sino-America Environment and Development Research Committee.

Mr. Niu mainly engaged in the research of social physics, environment and development and sustainable development. He joined the drafting of the guiding document on global sustainable development of the UN titled “Our Common Future” (namely the Brundtland Report) together with Chinese academician Ma Shijun as early as 1983, and put forward a whole set of indicator system known as “Niu’s Index” throughout overseas academic circle based on the research of the issue of “national modernization” in 2001.
