The World Conservation Union (IUCN)
Mr. Moosa was elected President of The World Conservation Union (IUCN) by the Third World Conservation Congress held in 2004. He also occupies a number of significant business and political positions within his home country and abroad. He currently serves as Executive Chairman of Lereko Investment Holdings, serves on the Board of Directors of esteemed companies such as Eskom, Sanlam, Sun International and Imperial Holdings and is on the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress, amongst others.
An anti-apartheid activist, Mr. Moosa was one of the key negotiators of the African National Congress during the drafting of South Africa’s new constitution and the country’s transition to a new democratic order. Appointed to the Cabinet of President Nelson Mandela in April 1994, Mr. Moosa held the positions of Minister of Provincial Affairs and Constitutional Development from 1996 and that of Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism from 1999-2004.
Mr. Moosa has won international acclaim as a competent and insightful mediator during the Northern Ireland Peace Process, the World Summit on Sustainable Development and the Fifth IUCN World Parks Congress - the latter two both taking place in South Africa under the leadership of his Ministry.
A recognised environmental leader, Mr. Moosa is passionate about democracy, sustainable development, freedom and security. Under his leadership, South Africa ratified and signed into law a number of multilateral environmental agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change, the Conventions on Biological Diversity, and others. As Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, he promulgated various regulations aiming to protect the environment, significantly enlarged both terrestrial and marine protected areas across international borders in southern Africa and introduced a comprehensive suite of environmental legislation further enhancing environmental management within the country.
Mr. Moosa was born in Johannesburg, South African. He holds a B Sc Degree majoring in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Durban-Westville in 1976-1978.
